Funders

The development of this book was generously underwritten by a gift from the Gertrude Hochschild Sergievsky Charitable Trust. Timely funding from the Band Foundation allowed us to complete the resource and expand its impact. General support funding (covering a host of necessary activities and bridging gaps) was provided by the Cogan Family Foundation, West Foundation, and Hesperian’s individual donors. We are deeply grateful for their support.

Special appreciation

Our heartfelt thanks to the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) for their invaluable partnership. IBE’s support in facilitating connections with reviewers was instrumental in bringing this resource to fruition. The enthusiasm, expertise, and dedication of the IBE team expanded our network and strengthened the book’s content. Their Advocate’s Toolkit for Reducing Epilepsy Stigma in Africa provided the definition and classifications for stigma we used as well as inspiration for one of the book’s stigma-related illustrations.

Eddie Chengo, Director of the Foundation for People with Epilepsy (FPE) Neurology Centre in Kenya, graciously reviewed the entire manuscript to ensure that complex medical and pharmaceutical information was accurately presented, and perhaps more importantly, to lend us the benefit of his years of committed interactions supporting people with epilepsy.

We deeply admire the work of Espacio Epilepsia, Keilah Foundation, the Nakivale refugee camp “Care for All” project, Kenya Association for the Welfare of People with Epilepsy (KAWE), Neurology on Wheels, Purple Bench Initiative, and Samman Association, whose community-centered care and advocacy programs are featured in this book. We are particularly grateful to those who shared with us their personal journeys to live well with epilepsy: Vinay Jani, Priti Vishwakarma, and Bright Bwalya. We are indebted to Mauricio Olave Aguirre, who prepared Spanish translations of many chapters and coordinated invaluable feedback from Latin America.

Grassroots community groups and organizational collaborators

Medical professionals, epilepsy advocates, people with epilepsy, and epilepsy caregivers from different parts of the world participated as advisors and reviewers, individually and in groups. Their diverse perspectives, critiques, and suggestions have improved the book’s accuracy, usability, and cultural relevance.
